The city truly began to flourish in the 19th century. After becoming the seat of Lawrence County in 1849, its growth was supercharged by the arrival of the Beaver and Erie Canal and, later, the railroads. This transformed the community into a bustling hub of industry and innovation. By the early 20th century, New Castle had earned a global reputation as the “Tin Plate Capital of the World,” attracting hard-working immigrants who added rich layers to our cultural fabric.

The 1920s were a golden age, leaving a legacy of stunning architecture like the magnificent Scottish Rite Cathedral that still graces the skyline.
