The Greer Tin Mills in New Castle, Pennsylvania, originated in the early 1890s and were founded by George M. Greer and his brother Charles Greer. The company, originally called the New Castle Steel and Tin Plate Company, began operation in October 1893 with a four-mill plant and a bar mill. George Greer, a prominent local businessman and skilled organizer, played a key role in establishing the tin plate industry in New Castle, which was a major factor in the city’s rapid population growth during that period. The Greer Tin Mill, often referred to simply as Greer’s Tin Mill, became one of the largest tin plate manufacturing sites in the world.
